The 74VHC595 is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register. These devices are often used as very simple I/O expanders for driving displays or relays. A controller clocks data into the shift register serially; once loaded it enables the data to reach the parallel outputs, illuminating display LEDs or switching relays. A 5V controller can be connected to a 3V display module by taking advantage of the 74VHC595’s overvoltage tolerant inputs. The VHCT inputs are designed to be driven by TTL input levels; as a result, buffers with this low input threshold, such as the 74VHCT244, can be used to interface between newer 3.3V systems and legacy 5V systems.
