ZNR® devices are constructed with low-resistance grains composed of zinc–oxide and a razor-thin, high-resistance grain boundary. ZNRs function as surge absorbers because of the non-linearity that each boundary has. The equivalent electrical circuit of the ZNR would be back-to-back zener diodes and a parallel connected capacitor. In other words, three components are required to do the job of one ZNR.
